New York, NY (PRWEB) December 13, 2011

Organizational skills are a vital component to a happy and successful life. Most people with ADD have added difficulties with organization, often because they fear they wont become perfectly organized. For those in need of support to become more organized, The Sachs Center in Manhattan has announced new therapy services for adults with ADD who struggle with organizational difficulties. In commemoration of this new service, Dr. George Sachs offers these 10 Organizational Tips:

1. Limit Your Lists

Compiling lists with endless projects tends to lead to jumping around between tasks without ever finishing any one of them. Keep no more than five tasks on the to-do list at a time. Once those five tasks are finished, start a new list.

2. Reward Accomplishments

Making organizational changes doesnt happen overnight. And just the same with any project, ADD causes many people to lose motivation while endeavoring to make new organizational practices a habit. To avoid pitfalls, set up a reward system for smaller accomplishments (such as completing a 5-task to-do list) to stay motivated.

3. Mandate Deadlines

Dont spend days agonizing over decisions. Set a time and date to make decisions by and stick to it. Remember, there is no perfect choice when tough decisions need to be made. And endless pro/con lists only further complicate the decision-making process. Make the best choice by the deadline and move on.

4. One Step At A Time

Trying to tackle multiple steps of a large project all at once often leads to failure, or at least to major frustration and burnout. To counter this, take small steps to finish a large project. And remember to focus and complete one step at a time before moving on to the next; jumping ahead is counterproductive.

5. Schedule Everything

Successful organization requires good time-management, which is often a major challenge for people with ADD. Avoid distractions by using a daily planner to structure free time each day. Get a jump on the next day by setting cell phone or computer alarm reminders before each appointment the night before.

6. De-clutter Keepsakes

Keepsakes serve as an emotional reminder of good times past, which are important. But, holding on to every sentimental object will create clutter home in a hurry. Set aside an hour every Sunday to catalog a few keepsakes at a time by photographing them and scrapbooking the photo with a descriptive paragraph about why the item is important. Then donate the items each week.

7. Give Keys a Home

Assign a special place for the most-used items, such as keys, wallet, mail, etc. This allows for quick access to those important possessions and saves the time and stress of searching for them while running out the door.

8. Plan Ahead

We cant predict the future, but we can plan for it. An overwhelming day can incapacitate and impede the progress of even the most successful people, and especially those with ADD. First, adjust expectations for a challenging day ahead by acknowledging it will be difficult and may feel overwhelming at times. Then, take breaks throughout the day and remember that we are always doing our best. And lastly, if a busy day is ahead, lay out clothes the night before, pack a lunch and store it overnight in the fridge, and lay out car keys or purse by the door.

9. Streamline Your Finances

Pick a time and date each month to review information regarding bank accounts, investments, and retirement plans. Switch to online banking and have access to account information 24/7. Deposit checks from home electronically, saving valuable time and energy. Use a single checking account if possible, allowing for easier access and management of your finances. And keep credit cards to a minimum, limiting open credit accounts to two or three total.

10. Employ an ADD Therapist or Organization Coach

Few of us like asking for help, but sometimes the best way to organize ourselves is to elicit the help of a professional. Working with a therapist or organization coach will provide an ally for support in becoming organized and successful. They will help with motivation to stay on the path, while encouraging the development of skills to more effectively manage time, incorporate a structured schedule, and prioritize whats most important.

Palo Alto, Calif. (PRWEB) December 12, 2011

Palo Alto University (PAU) a private, non-profit, higher education institution that combines the advantages of a professional school with a traditional university, recently hosted its second Town and Gown event at the Stanford Faculty Club. The gathering focused on many of the challenges facing Santa Clara County youth and discussing ways the university and community could work together to provide greater resources for children and families. A panel of three speakers addressed the group of mostly non-profit organizations and elected officials, including Robert Russell, Ph.D., Director of Clinical Training at PAU, Anne Ehresman of Project Cornerstone, and Jorge Wong, Ph.D., Director of Behavioral Health Services for Asian Americans for Community Involvement (AACI) and PAU faculty member.

The goal of this months Town and Gown was to find out how non-profits and governmental services could collaborate to bring more resources and services to bear on existing, known needs for children and families in the community, said Town and Gown organizer and PAUs VP for Business Affairs and CFO June Klein, EdD. There is redundancy between these groups and we need to collaborate to be more effective and efficient in delivering these services.

Panelists outlined many of the key issues facing teens, ranging from interpersonal relations with parents and peers, to bullying, to issues of socioeconomic and ethnic diversity. Following the presentations, the group of attendees brainstormed ways they could pool resources to maximize resources to best serve the community.

Ms. Ehresman of Project Cornerstone, tackled the issue of what makes children thrive and explained that kids need developmental assets when growing up, or the social and emotional building blocks they need to succeed in life. Children with 30-40 assets are able to thrive which leads to better performance in school and greater happiness overall, said Ms. Ehresman. By contrast, those with 20 or less are vulnerable and move toward the at risk category the lower we go.

Dr. Russell of PAU walked the group through some alarming stats on bullying, revealing one in five to six children or adolescents report being bullied, and stressed the importance of learning the signs that your child may be a victim of bullying. Dr. Russell shared that no children are unaffected by bullying in school, on the playground or in the neighborhood. He explained that the best way to prevent bullying is to talk with your kids and listen to them on a daily basis and be a good example of kindness of leadership. He also noted that it is important to spend time at school during recess, as 67% of bullying happens when adults are not present.

Dr. Wong of AACI focused on the issue of race, disclosing that 47% of Santa Clara County residents are non-white, 36% are foreign-born residents, and 36% are first-generation children of immigrants. When thinking about how to improve the lives of children in Santa Clara County, it is important to also factor in the populations ethnic and socioeconomic background, said Dr. Wong. You will quickly see the inequities that exist in the Asian population, where 21% of Cambodians and 11% of Vietnamese live below the poverty level, 24% of Asians overall do not have health insurance, and overall Asians have the highest domestic violent death rate.

At the event, Dr. Klein set up tables of eight, strategically arranging folks so as to have broad representation from stakeholders at each table. For instance, a typical table had a PAU faculty member, a vice president from a community organization, a PAU staff member and an elected official. To really get the creative juices flowing, I wanted people to stretch beyond their comfort zone and by placing them with folks from different professional backgrounds, we were able to accomplish just that, continued Dr. Klein.

Some of the ideas generated from the brainstorm included having:

Developing a referral mechanism that would allow various groups to receive referrals based on their expertise and allow people in need to easily get to the right agency

Providing PAU interns for both the Santa Clara County Office of Education and at Santa Clara County public schools

Offering free screenings for depression and anxiety for children and adolescents in the community through PAUs Kurt and Barbara Gronowski Clinic

Finding ways for PAU to collaborate with more local agencies like HEARD and the YMCA to help teenagers with mental health issues and more preventive services to improve resiliency for teenagers who are at risk.

Creating opportunities for PAU students help with mentoring or advising middle and high school students to talk about struggling with the stress and pressures of becoming adults

Dr. Klein will be working with PAU staff to develop action plans for many of the recommendations.

These are just a handful of the ideas generated from the brainstorm, said Allen Calvin, Ph.D., President of Palo Alto University, and the group could have easily spent several hours more but we ran out of time. It just further illustrates the need for these types of gatherings, and I commend June for adeptly pulling together such an outstanding group to tackle these important issues.

Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) January 30, 2012

The National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) expressed strong support for Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) recent introduction of a bill to reauthorize the Older Americans Act (OAA). Important initiatives of the reauthorization include meals program improvements, preventive health care, modernization of senior centers, and other programs to promote a greater quality of life for senior citizens and their families.

The OAA was first introduced in 1965 by President Lyndon B. Johnson to provide comprehensive assistance to seniors, enabling them to remain independent in their homes and communities.

NAELA has been a long-time supporter of the OAA. Its a win for everyone. Programs supported by the OAA help seniors live independently in their homes, while preventing taxpayers from having to pay for more expensive nursing homes, hospitals, and other health care services, said NAELA President Edwin Boyer, Esq., CAP.

Several national organizations, including NAELA, wrote http://www.sanders.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/OAA 15 Letters of Support.pdf [letters to Sen. Sanders __title__ ], Chairman of the Subcommittee on Primary Health and Aging in the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, on their support of the OAA and the positive impact it has on millions of Americans, age 65 and older. The need is greater than ever for services provided by the OAA in the struggling U.S. economy.

About NAELA

Members of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) are attorneys who are experienced and trained in working with the legal problems of aging Americans and individuals of all ages with disabilities. Established in 1987, NAELA is a non-profit association that assists lawyers, bar organizations and others. The mission of NAELA is to establish NAELA members as the premier providers of legal advocacy, guidance and services to enhance the lives of people with special needs and people as they age. NAELA currently has members across the United States, Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom. For more information, visit NAELA.org.

About Elder and Special Needs Law

Elder and Special Needs Law are specialized areas that involve representing, counseling and assisting seniors, people with disabilities and their families in connection with a variety of legal issues, with a primary emphasis on promoting the highest quality of life for individuals. Typically, Elder Law and Special Needs Law address the convergence of legal needs with the social, psychological, medical and financial needs of individuals. The Elder Law and Special Needs Law attorney handles estate planning and counsels clients about planning for incapacity with health care decision-making documents. The Elder and Special Needs Law attorney also assists clients in planning for possible long-term care needs, including at-home care, assisted living or nursing home care. Locating the appropriate type of care, coordinating public and private resources to finance the cost of care and working to ensure the clients right to quality care are all part of the Elder and Special Needs Law practice.

(PRWEB) January 08, 2012

Alejandra Font does not look like a typical drill sergeant and she does not wear fatigues to her classes. In fact, she is the mother of two, a fitness competition winner, and a previous participant of a Chino Hills boot camp. Once she shed all her excess pounds, toned up and fell in love with boot camp, she wanted to reach out and help others. I work with great people in an atmosphere I love and have fun, while making a difference in peoples lives every day what more could I want? she laughs.

At The Camp Boot Camp in Chino Hills, classes start bright and early for the real weight loss warriors. My wife asked me to go with her and I was very hesitant. I went, thinking she would not stay with it. Well, now Im fit and totally hooked! I get her out of bed daily for the 5AM class, says participant Jack Kaylor.

Chino Hills boot camp sessions include familiar moves like push-ups, squats, and lunges, as well as obstacle courses, balance exercises and team-building drills. Each exercise can be modified to make it easier or more challenging, so participants can choose their own level of difficulty. The trainers mix it up with periods of high-intensity, followed by periods of recovery, which studies show blasts fat more effectively than other types of training.

Were using all the same techniques that celebrity personal trainers use, explains Chino Hills Boot Camp Owner and Champion Bodybuilder Sam Bakhtiar, except we dont charge you the $ 200 an hour that they charge! Our boot camp classes are ideal for people who want to be more than a nameless face in the crowd, but they want something that fits within their budget. Were happy to make that happen for Chino Hills residents.

Sam says that the average Chino Hills personal trainer participant loses 10 pounds their first month through a combination of exercise and proper nutrition. Most people dont need to check-in to a 24/7 fitness boot camp. They just need all the tools for success, which is what we provide here. You sit down with a personal trainer one-on-one to set a few fitness goals, draw up a day-by-day meal plan to follow, and check your start measurements so we can track your progress. We meet for an hour, three times a week, and give you the best bang for your buck. We even go so far as to guarantee that youll lose weight and love our program within 30 days or you get 100 percent of your money back.

Palo Alto, CA (PRWEB) December 12, 2011

Home Care Assistance, North Americas premier provider of in-home senior care, is excited to announce its newest book, The Handbook of Live-in Care. Written by Dr. Kathy Johnson, PHD, Dr. Jim Johnson, PHD, and Lily Sarafan, the book offers family caregivers usually an adult son or daughter practical how-to advice on caring for an elderly loved one. From understanding the psychology of homebound adults to tips for assisting with everyday needs, The Handbook of Live-In Care is the first definitive guide to maximizing the quality of life for an older adult.

Over 25% of adults today are caring for a parent or loved one, and the number continues to grow. The 65 and over population is the fastest growing segment of the American population and is set to double in the next 30 years, said Lily Sarafan, President and COO of Home Care Assistance. Many families try to cope with aging by taking on caregiving responsibilities, on top of their other family, professional and social commitments. Since many of these family caregivers do not have a nursing or healthcare background, we wanted to help educate them with an easy-to-follow and affordable book on how they can provide the best care for their loved one.

The Handbook of Live-In Care provides caregivers with everything they need to know about taking care of an elderly loved one who is home bound. The book is comprised of 15 chapters covering important topics such as: The Psychology of Home Bound Seniors, Tips for the Live-in Caregiver, How to Change Diapers and Catheters and How to Exercise Safely. While it should not be considered a substitute for formal training, it provides valuable information for family caregivers stepping into the role for the first time.

In addition to practical advice on providing care, The Handbook of Live-In Care also addresses the impact of caregiving on the caregivers emotional, physical and mental well-being.

We hope that this book can be a resource for the millions of Americans providing care for their loved ones, said Dr. Kathy Johnson, Founder and CEO of Home Care Assistance. Being a caregiver is far from easy. 40-70% of family caregivers experience clinically significant symptoms of depression and have poorer health and weaker immune systems than comparable adults. This book will help them understand the feelings of stress and anxiety they have are normal and provide tips on dealing with that stress in an effective way.

The Handbook of Live-In Care: A Guide for Caregivers, can be purchased online at Amazon.com. For a limited time, we are also making the handbook available for a free PDF download at http://www.familycaregivertraining.com.

(PRWEB UK) 30 June 2011

Think meditation is a length process you dont have time for, then think again. Teresa hale is running a new set of private and group meditation classes at the hale clinic in central London for the first time. Using her simple techniques you can relax, unwind and reep the health benefits of meditation.

The worlds leading complementary health centre The Hale Clinic was established in 1987 and officially opened by H.R.H. The Prince of Wales in 1988. The Clinic was founded by Teresa Hale whose aim is to combine and integrate the principles of conventional and complementary medicine,on the basis that no one system has the whole answer to every medical problem. Great emphasis is placed on preventative medicine as a way of maintaining good health.

Founder Teresa Hale began teaching Meditation and Yoga over 30 years ago. Teresas exploration in this field led to the creation of The Hale Clinic where Teresa has continued to deepen her understanding and practice of Meditation and Yoga.

Teresa has had direct experience of how Meditation can be applied to a whole range of situations including Health, Creativity, Mental Ability, Reduction of Stress, the Workplace and Scientific Research. Teresa also has a deep interest in the Philosophical and Spiritual aspects of Meditation.

Talking to Teresa, she says In a modern world, which demands more of us, we are constantly under pressure and our stress levels are through the roof. We find ourselves taking on a larger load, trying to balance work and life as well as trying to maintain important relationships. The demands on oneself can be a detriment to our health and wellbeing. We immerse in the daily grind, but fail to take time out for ourselves.

For all the chaos of work and life, many feel a need for silence, calm and clarity. We sometimes battle with guilt and depression as to why we are unable to successfully juggle these tasks. So it is perhaps unsurprising that more people are turning to Meditation.

Teresa was asked the benefits of meditation , to which she replied Meditation can reduce stress, help people relax and find a sense of inner peace and clarity. Meditation gives that time to really be at peace, clear our minds, remove the chaos and organize our lives. Meditation allows us to think clearly, reduce stress, improve concentration, increase spontaneity and creativity, and build a sense of detachment from everyday situations, which may cause us stress or anger.

Teresa Hale runs meditation classes and Workshops with the aim of providing clients with the tools to successfully balance their lives. Teresa has a great understanding and the realistic approach that the chaos around us may not disappear, but Meditation you can manage them more effectively with calmness and clarity.

Over the years Teresa Hale has supported and taught an array of clients from family groups with young children to professionals. Teresas aim is to provide you with the support and tools you need to successfully manage the challenges in your life.

Teresa Hales Meditation classes are about opening the mind, allowing it to address any repressed emotions and take flight within a sky of options. The classes bring focus and direction as well as a sense of being inspired, she runs group and private meditation classes. Teresa runs her meditation courses in london at the Hale Clinic.

With an understanding that time is of the essence Teresa has created different types of Meditation classes to suit the individual.

Simply Meditation provides a quick and effective techniques to utilise anywhere; it could be 5-10 minutes in the office, on the train to and from work, on a bus or when you wake up in the morning. These Techniques allow for easy accessibility no matter where one is.

The Simply Meditation techniques will leave the client feeling energised, calmer, healthier, and able to participate on an effective, practical level in daily life.

Teresa feels Many people find it very difficult to switch off the constant mental chatter going on daily in their mind. Meditation trains you to control your mind instead of your mind controlling you. Most important of all, Meditation gives us the ability to change how we feel inside.
